There are four classes in the KS3 department and they are all based at the Downham site. The pupils are aged from 11 – 14. All KS3 classes are now on the second floor so that there is a clear transition from the Primary department when pupils move up.
There are three celebration assemblies each week for KS3 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. During this time we reflect on the day and students share or show their fantastic work with other classes. We also have moment or star of the day from each class.
Most pupils come to the KS3 department from Primary although we sometimes have pupils transferring from other schools. Pupils still have opportunities to go horse-riding and swimming in the local area and classes go out in educational visits throughout the year to enhance learning.
KS3 has two intervention afternoons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tuesday afternoons are focused on independence and the skills each individual student needs for future life. Groups include travel training, cooking therapy, intensive interaction, life skills and drama club. Within these sessions staff work intensely with students on specific areas of need and developing skills for future life that are then transferred into the classroom and beyond. On a Thursday afternoon we take part in hobbies afternoon. The idea of this is to develop student’s interests and passions and also offer opportunities to develop new hobbies. We have a number of groups including football club, beauty club, gardening, computer gaming and dance. Groupings are determined by each student’s personalised plan to ensure maximum learning opportunities.
