Drumbeat’s Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our immediate environments and beyond. At Drumbeat we strive to prepare our students for their life after school, enabling them to be happy, independent members of the community with the skills to manage and understand their environment safely.

The aim of this curriculum is to encourage all children to develop and use a range of skills including observation, planning and investigations, as well as encouraging them to question the world around them and become independent learners, thinkers and explorers.

Our Science curriculum takes a multi-sensory approach to deliver a clear, progressive curriculum that is both age and skill appropriate. Students are given the opportunity to link their direct practical experience with scientific ideas throughout the key stages. Our curriculum encompasses links to ASDAN, AQA Entry Level Certifications, The Science National curriculum and EYFS Development Matters. The delivery of the curriculum is influenced by the most current ASD practices including Attention Autism and Autism Education Trust. Lessons planning has been influenced by speech and language therapists who have ensured pupils will be engaged through the use of Alternative and Augmentative Communication systems.

The Drumbeat Science curriculum is based around the 4 key principles of the Science National Curriculum; Enquiry, Biology, Physics and Chemistry. Each scientific area is taught through interesting theoretical and practical sessions to make science accessible and functional for all. The Drumbeat Science Curriculum is progressive because it allows the same skill to be taught with varying outcomes for the year groups across the school. This means that learning a scientific skill is accessible, appropriate and diverse enough for our most complex learners and our most able learners. The Science curriculum is supported by a wide range of interventions including; cooking, travel training, gardening and residential trips.  All the interventions provide an opportunity for the curriculum to be delivered in practical, real life situation, which allows students to generalise their scientific skills beyond the classroom.
