Welcome to Drumbeat School and ASD Service

Headteacher's Welcome

It is a pleasure to welcome you to Drumbeat School and ASD Services, a community-maintained special needs school in the London Borough of Lewisham. We are committed to providing the best education. Our school community is passionate and create innovative learning opportunities to promote holistic development. There is a range of expertise throughout this school, from our highly skilled teachers and teaching assistants to a range of teams and leaders. Together, we ensure every child’s needs are met. Our teachers lead their class team through shared goals which are informed by parents, families, NHS Therapists, CAMHS professionals, and the Multi-agency Support Team. We place this vision at the heart of an integrated provision that values the power of partnerships and collaboration.

We have expanded our provision so we are now a three school site, Downham, Brockley and Turnham. This is exciting as it means we can provide to more Lewisham children with a statement for autism and they do not have to go out of borough.

We are also working with key organisations like University College London where we have delivered a lecture for students studying autism and collaborating in key research projects that will inform practice internationally. We work with Challenge Partners and are able to advise for best practice in schools nationally. This year we have supported schools in Northern Ireland and Sweden where we have trained staff to support in the setting up of SEN provisions.

Our outreach team provide invaluable training and advice for the mainstream schools and parents in Lewisham through workshops, podcasts and group training.

Thank you all for working with us to promote an inclusive society that recognises the talents of our amazing children and young people.

There is an Autism friendly environment across all Drumbeat sites with a wide range of innovative and tried and tested strategies that support pupil’s engagement with the curriculum and key areas, such as independence.

All pupils at Drumbeat have a learning map that details their personalised curriculum outcomes. These outcomes come from pupil’s EHCP and Drumbeat levels/curriculum documents.

Learning outside the classroom is of high importance across Drumbeat.  We believe practical application of skills and community integration are integral to pupils’ successful life outcomes. Throughout their time at Downham pupils will have access to swimming, horse riding, forest school, trampolining sessions and class-based trips. In addition to learning outside the classroom pupils have access to a wide range of community projects.

Each pupil has a home-school communication book/planner, which travels to and from school with them every day. This helps the class teacher and parents/carers keep in contact on a daily basis. We have a strong ethos of home/school communication and this is just one way we are able to support this relationship.

On the rest of the campus, there is also have a library, offices, meeting room, a gym, media suite and a welcoming lobby.

Students are placed in tutor groups according to their key stage/needs. The number of students in their tutor group is dependent on ability and level of need. Each tutor group is supported by a teacher and assistants. They are very experienced and strive to provide the best for our students.

We follow a structured timetable, which is either classroom based or on other parts of the campus and local community. As students move into 6th Form, they follow a timetable that is less classroom based and more focussed on experiencing aspects of the local community.

We have joint Key Stage assemblies once a week, where we might explore a theme, present student work or celebrate achievements. We have a number of initiatives such as a school cafe which opens weekly and is run by the students. We also have our own allotment where students can grow their own produce. We have plenty of outdoor space on site, where students can maintain the gardens. Our campus provides many opportunities for our students to develop their life skills.

Our main aim is for our students to reach their full potential in order to lead as independent lives as possible.
